Overview

Apple releases bug fixes, vulnerability patches, feature improvements and even OS upgrades for macOS and its apps via Software Update. Although your Mac automatically checks for new updates once a week, prompting you if there are new updates available, you can manually check to see if there are any available macOS updates or upgrades.

Instructions

macOS Monterey and BelowShow

Open System Preferences from either the Apple Menu (Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your screen) or from your Applications folder
Click Software Update
If an OS upgrade (e.g., an upgrade from macOS 12 to macOS 13) is available a banner will be displayed at the top of the Software Update window. If you would like to upgrade your OS, click the Upgrade Now button in the banner. If you would prefer to update your OS (e.g., an update from macOS 12.3 to macOS 12.6.1), click "More info..." below the upgrade banner
In the drop down window, click the Install Now or Restart Now button

macOS Ventura and AboveShow

Open System Settings from either the Apple Menu (Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your screen) or from your Applications folder
If an update is available a notification and badge will appear on the left side of the System Settings window. Click on either the "Software Update Available" notification or click General > Software Update
Click the Install Now or Restart Now button
